History of Smoking
It is estimated that tobacco began growing in the Americas around 6,000 B.C.E. By 1,000 B.C.E., people began smoking and chewing the leaves of the tobacco plant, mainly in Mayan civilizations. It is not known how or why it came into use. The first European to become the first tobacco smoker was a shipmate of Christopher Columbus, Rodrigo de Jerez, in 1493 C.E. He tried the first version of a cigar from the indigenous people of Cuba. He was later thrown in jail for THREE years for lighting up in public during the Spanish Inquisition. Clearly the anti-smoking campaign started centuries ago! Sir Francis Drake (1541-1596) was the first sea captain to sail around the world in the 1500’s. He is credited with introducing tobacco to England. Thus the rest is history………..
Before the discovery of tobacco, some herbs and plants were smoked generally as medicine for people with respiratory problems. Much like the nebulizers of today, people would burn these herbs on charcoaled cypress wood and breathe in the smoke to loosen phlegm from the lungs and quiet coughs. Some of the herbs were additionally made into concoctions, like syrups, as a cough remedy or expectorant.
The Roman, Pliny the Elder (23 C.E. – 79 C.E.), the founder of botany in the Latin world, recommended dried leaves & roots of certain herbs to be burnt, & the smoke drawn into the mouth through a long reed and inhaled.
Herbs that are helpful
Coltsfoot, Mullein, Rosemary and Thyme are some of the most common herbs used medicinally for respiratory illnesses, coughs, emphysemas & as expectorants. Coltsfoot & Rosemary were used raw in cough syrups up until the 1920’s. Mullein is a powerful expectorant and Thyme is credited to actually strengthening lung tissue.* We use these herbs and more in our cigarettes. The cigarettes are available in full flavor, light and menthol.
