Before the discovery of tobacco, some herbs and plants were smoked generally as medicine for people with respiratory problems. Much like the nebulizers of today, people would burn these herbs on charcoaled cypress wood and breathe in the smoke to loosen phlegm from the lungs and quiet coughs. Some of the herbs were additionally made into concoctions, like syrups, as a cough remedy or expectorant.

The Roman, Pliny the Elder (23 C.E. – 79 C.E.), the founder of botany in the Latin world, recommended dried leaves & roots of certain herbs to be burnt, & the smoke drawn into the mouth through a long reed and inhaled.

Herbs that are helpful

Coltsfoot, Mullein, Rosemary and Thyme are some of the most common herbs used medicinally for respiratory illnesses, coughs, emphysemas & as expectorants. Coltsfoot & Rosemary were used raw in cough syrups up until the 1920’s. Ye Olde Scale & Measure now has tinctures beginning to soak. We are shelving new oils this week. Our first two are Comfrey and Lavendar.

We have also created a topical analgesic salve that has proven effective against Lupus Rash, heat rash, minor scrapes and chafing.

It has been asked of us to create new salves. Great success with Comfrey! I was aware it was a good healing plant; however, I used some on two scratches that I received from one of our blackberry vines. The pain began to dissappear within a half hour and in two days there was no trace of the scratches. I was amazed at the speed of healing. I used to use a store triple antibiotic ointment and that would help the pain overnight and it would take a few days to a week to heal scratches like those.

I used straight infused Comfrey oil on the scratches. For convenience, we will be making it into a salve so it will stay put under a bandage, covering the wound and protecting it at the same time. This salve will be especially good for diabetics. It helps to heal quite quickly. Since the salve is made with beeswax, the antibacterial properties of the bee will protect, as well. Since there are precautions with using large amounts of Comfrey for long periods of time, only use Comfrey products up to a month and only use a thin layer. Comfrey is also good for burns. Wet comfrey leaves will cool the skin immediately after the burn, and the salve will help the new skin stay protected from bacteria while it grows and conditions itself to the environment.
